How is this course relevant to me?
As the UK increasingly faces an ageing population its pensions industry is witnessing serious problems due to the longevity risk, i.e. each person not having adequate assets to meet his/her liabilities for retirement. Many legal changes about pensions have taken place recently that will impact on our lives when we become old.

About the course:
This day course, among other things, will

– Provide basic insights into pensions as an essential tool to mitigate old age and self-financing,

– Explain risks associated with conventional pension schemes containing riba (interest), gharar (risk; deceptive uncertainty) and maysir (gambling)

– Offer models for occupational pensions for Muslim employers to consider

– Discuss retirement in Islam, and

– Explain the Shari’a Fund offered by the National Employment Savings Trust (NEST).

Course Instructors

Primary Instructor:

Shaykh Faizal Manjoo is an attorney at law, an academic and also a Shari’a scholar from South Africa, and a member of the Shari’a Supervisory Board of a number of Islamic Financial Institutions in South Africa, Bahrain, France and Mauritius. Presently based at the Markfield Institute for Higher Education (Leicester), he lectures in many universities as a guest lecturer and is a consultant in the field of Islamic Finance, family law and commercial law. He has authored a number of seminal works on Islamic Finance and is regular presenter at international conferences.

Guest Instructor:

Shaykh Bilal Khan is uniquely positioned as both a ‘Magic Circle’ English qualified lawyer and an award-winning Shari’a scholar. He serves in an advisory capacity at the Shari’a Standards Review Committee of the Accounting and Auditing Organisation for Islamic Financial Institutions (AAOIFI) and as Takaful Panel Member of the International Cooperative & Mutual Insurance Federation. A Hafidh of the Qur’an since the age of 11, he embarked on prolonged Shari’a education and training with ijaza (scholarly permission of transmission) from many leading scholars and jurists.
